Tebow's socia-political views are probably most notable in the media: last year, In 2010, Tebow controversially starred in an ad for the right-wing group Focus on the Family, which opposes LGBT rights. In fact, the organization has argued that there "is no evidence that homosexuals, as a class, are discriminated against in the present society." Athletes have had a history of accepting, tolerating or just keeping their mouths shut about some of the crazy "liberal stuff" that goes on in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Jeff Garcia's Wife |
My first recollection was when stand up all round good teammate Garrison Hearst made a derogatory comment about homosexuals while playing for the San Francisco 49ers. Uhm...Garrison, have you ever driven up from Santa Clara PAST Candlestick Park and actually into the city of San Francisco? You gotta be aware of the city's famous "mixed...and I guess not so mixed" demographics". Now it's understandable to some degree that many athletes who come from many different areas of the United States which aren't as socially liberal as San Francisco would have trouble accepting or even tolerating liberal behavior that isn't as accepted in their home communities. But as a professional athlete you have to be able to at least keep your mouth shut and not get into trouble. But of course when they don't, is when it gets interesting. Such as when T.O. accused Jeff Garcia of being Gay. Owen's comments: "Like my boy tells me: If it looks like a rat and smells like a rat, by golly, it is a rat." Now I've met Jeff Garcia a few times and as anyone who's listened to him speak on TV knows, he has a lisp that doesn't make him the masculine sounding guy. And he usually dresses like the Queer Eye guys got a hold of him. Garcia denied it by mentioning his past girlfriends and eventually marrying a Playboy Playmate.
Of course homosexuality isn't the only liberal behavior that San Francisco is known for. Take a walk in Golden Gate Park near the Haight and take a wiff. I swear if it weren't for the sea breeze, there would be a permanent cloud of marijuana smoke over "Hippie Hill" (part of Sharon Meadows). In fact on multiple occasions I have played tennis at the nearby Golden Gate tennis courts (some of which are directly adjacent to Hippie Hill) and have had a healthy second hand high going into my second tennis set.

“It was crazy. I was looking at the cops a couple of times during the game." "My wife and I were walking down the street (Tuesday) and there was a guy smoking a joint, with a cop 50 yards away," he told the Post.
Of course one of my favorite media spotlights on San Francisco's liberal acceptance of controlled substances also happened during the 2010 World Series. Texas news reporter Newy Scruggs showed his surprise with this commentary that was met with a healthy dose of humor. I mean wouldn't it be awesome to do a documentary film of Tim Tebow living and being a part of some of the crazier aspects of life celebrated in San Francisco? Tim Tebow at the Folsom (Fringe) Street Fair? Tim Tebow smoking out with the hippies in the Haight and Golden Gate Park. Tim Tebow as a guest speaker during Gay Pride? Tebow and the Burners (great sounding band name)...Tim Tebow and some of his followers at Burning Man!
